Scientific Diving Minor

This minor within the Department of Kinesiology and Recreation Administration´s Diving Program provides broad-based support of sub-aquatic research, education, and recreational activities with a focus on diver safety and proficiency in the challenging waters of Northern California.
As a research, educational, and vocational asset, the diving program is highly interdisciplinary. Diving has been used by students, faculty, and staff in the fields of marine biology, oceanography, fisheries, wildlife, geology, engineering, industrial technology, art, business administration, physical education, recreation administration, archeology, and natural resources. The minor facilitates undergraduate studies, advanced degrees, and careers in government or private sectors. The courses and certifications within the minor meet diving and training standards of Cal Poly Humboldt, the National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI), and the American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS). 

Required Courses:
• HED 120 CPR for the Professional Rescuer
• REC 282 DAN Oxygen Provider
• REC 262 Beginning Scuba (NAUI Scuba Diver certification)
• REC 362 Advanced Scuba (NAUI Master Diver certification)
• REC 471 Scientific Diver (NAUI Scientific Diver specialty certification, meets AAUS  Scientific Diver training requirements)

All courses require completed Humboldt diver certification documentation prior to any diving, including a university-approved medical exam (Appendix 3 from the Humboldt diving Safety Manual: Medical Evaluation of Fitness for SCUBA, Surface-Supplied, or Free Diving).
Anyone diving under the auspices of the University also needs current CPR and oxygen provider certification or to be enrolled in HED 120 (CPR for the Professional Rescuer) and REC 282 (DAN Oxygen Provider Certification).
