What We Do

The NCCP is a community resource for concussion education, awareness, assessment, and management care. We provide a variety of baseline and post injury services, and we're also proud to be involved with community outreach and education, as well as on-going concussion research. Students at Humboldt State gain hands on experience working with diverse community organizations and individuals, and in cutting edge concussion research. Community Outreach

The NCCP works closely with local health care professionals, sports teams and schools in Humboldt and Del Norte Counties, providing evidence-based concussion education and injury management. Additionally, our CSU-wide efforts aim at helping communities throughout California to implement their own concussion management plans. The NCCP serves more than a thousand Humboldt State students, faculty and staff, and over two thousand local community members each year. We have formed lasting partnerships with the Humboldt-Del Norte High School Sports League, College of the Redwoods, Dell'Arte International School of Physical Theatre, and local youth and adult sports organizations (e.g. Mad River Youth Soccer, Humboldt Roller Derby, Crabs Baseball). The NCCP also works with the Making Headway Traumatic Brain Injury Center in educating parents and children in the prevention of concussions.

Education

The NCCP delivers in-person education to constituents across California. We are adept at tailoring education to our audience and have offered CME courses for clinicians, trainings for coaches and educators, and brain and injury basics for kids and adults of all ages. We have developed online training modules for the CSU-system and also offer a variety of free educational support options. Trained volunteers and staff educate anyone interested about concussion using discussion, video, and interactive games.

For a more in-depth concussion education program, we offer advanced concussion training. It is a 60- to 90-minute comprehensive concussion education seminar for coaches, teachers, medical professionals, families, and athletes that goes beyond the basics. Using curriculum developed by NCCP co-founders Dr. Justus Ortega and Beth Larson, each seminar provides up-to-date evidence on the science and consensus best practices for concussion.
